LOS ANGELES ( August 20, 2025 ) -

After a sold-out premiere in New York, “Match In A Haystack,” the new documentary from 5-time Emmy-winning director and former VICE News journalist Joe Hill, is coming to Los Angeles theaters for a week.

Executive produced by Misty Copeland, the film captures the experience of artists creating amidst the turmoil of war. The Los Angeles run was timed to coincide with Ukrainian Independence Day, which is August 24, 2025.

A filmmaker Q&A moderated by Los Angeles Times film critic Katie Walsh will take place on August 27th with director Joe Hill.

The trailer for the film can be viewed here.

“Match In A Haystack” follows Ukraine’s most determined female dance group as they attempt to create their first show since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In a departure from traditional wartime documentaries that focus on destruction and devastation,

For many Ukrainian artists, Russia’s invasion in Ukraine is about more than just territory: it’s an attempt to erase Ukrainian identity. Through the lens of these women, the film looks at the forms resistance can take and the way new life roles can co-exist after intense trauma.

“Match In A Haystack” was co-produced with VICE News and Fit Via Vi with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting with an original score by Ukrainian-American composer Katya Richardson (“The Last Repair Shop”). The film will screen at Laemmle’s Royal August 29 through September 4, with the special engagement on the 27th.

Tickets can be purchased in person at Laemmle’s or on their website
