Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is honored to announce that next week its Mueller location in Austin will be renamed the Matthew McConaughey Cinema, honoring an artist whose work, spirit, and unmistakable connection to the State of Texas have long made him part of Austin’s cinematic story. The honor will be made official with a plaque formally unveiled at Alamo Drafthouse Mueller on Monday, August 10, during a special dedication event followed by an early screening of Black Bear’s critically acclaimed “The Rivals of Amziah King.”

The celebration will include a dedication toast featuring cocktails from Pantalones, the award-winning, organic tequila brand co-founded by McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves. McConaughey will introduce the screening of “The Rivals of Amziah King” and participate in a special post-screening Q&A alongside the film’s director Andrew Patterson and lead actress Angelina LookingGlass. Following the Q&A, McConaughey will be joined by musicians from the cast, including The Last Bison, for a live performance of songs featured in the film.

“More than just what’s on the screen, movies have always been about who you watch them with and the memories you take home,” said Matthew McConaughey. “Alamo Drafthouse has championed that kind of moviegoing from the very beginning, and to have a theater dedicated in my name in the city that’s shaped so much of who I am means a great deal to me.”

McConaughey joins a distinguished set of groundbreaking filmmakers and performers whose names are honored at Alamo Drafthouse locations, a group that includes Christopher Nolan, Pam Grier, Spike Lee, John Hughes, and Ivan Reitman. South Korean director Bong Joon Ho was the first to be so honored by the company in September 2019, following the US premiere at Fantastic Fest of his Best Picture-winning “Parasite” at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

Naming this cinema for Matthew is our way of honoring that connection. And hey, it’s just up the road from Darrell K Royal Stadium, so it’ll be an easy commute when he’s visiting the Longhorns.”

For generations of movie lovers, McConaughey has carried a little bit of Texas onto screens everywhere. From his unforgettable turn in “Dazed and Confused” to the multi-dimensional emotional sweep of “Interstellar,” the hard-won humanity of “Dallas Buyers Club,” and the indelible intensity of HBO’s True Detective, his performances have been marked by humor, curiosity, generosity, and a singular sense of place. A native of Uvalde and proud University of Texas graduate, he has remained one of Austin’s most recognizable cultural ambassadors—an artist whose path has taken him around the world without losing sight of the people, rhythms, and wide-open possibilities of home.

In addition to the Mueller renaming honor, on Sunday, August 16, participating Alamo Drafthouse locations will host one-night-only “The Rivals of Amziah King” Cocktail Party screenings. Guests will enjoy the King’s Sting, a honey-kissed cocktail featuring Pantalones Organic Tequila, and receive a complimentary Cocktail Kit and exclusive recipe card to recreate the drink at home.

“The Rivals of Amziah King” synopsis: Deep within the backwoods of rural Oklahoma, charismatic and musically gifted Amziah King (Matthew McConaughey) herds a bluegrass-playing band of misfits while overseeing the premier honey-making operation in town. When Amziah’s estranged foster daughter unexpectedly returns, Amziah leaps at the possibility to renew the connection and create a family business. But the honey game is ruthless, and Amziah’s rivals threaten to destroy everything he has built. The film also stars Angelina LookingGlass, Cole Sprouse, Scott Shepherd, Rob Morgan, Tony Revolori, Jake Horowitz, and Kurt Russell.
