The family-friendly musical fairy tale is an encore presentation of the company’s first-ever Live in HD transmission, recorded live on December 30, 2006
The Metropolitan Opera’s first-ever high-definition transmission into theatres, Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” returns to select theatres this holiday season as part of the “2025–26 Live in HD” season. The encore will be shown in select U.S. theatres on at 1:00PM local time on Saturday, December 6.
The Met’s abridged, English-language version of Mozart’s classic fairy-tale opera features a dazzling production by Tony Award–winner Julie Taymor. Tenor Matthew Polenzani leads the exceptional cast as Tamino, the noble prince on a quest to win the fair princess Pamina, sung by soprano Ying Huang. Baritone Nathan Gunn sings the role of the bird catcher Papageno, with soprano Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night and bass René Pape as Sarastro.
Alongside Taymor, who also designed the costumes and co-designed the puppetry, the production’s creative team includes set designer George Tsypin, lighting designer Donald Holder, co–puppet designer Michael Curry, and choreographer Mark Dendy. The English adaptation is by celebrated American poet and librettist J. D. McClatchy. Gary Halvorson directed the “Live in HD” presentation for theatres, which was originally transmitted live on December 30, 2006.
Tickets for “The Magic Flute” are now on sale at approximately 700 participating U.S. theatre locations. To purchase tickets for “The Magic Flute,” please visit the Fathom Entertainment website or participating theatre box offices (participating theatres are subject to change).
