Film surpasses $100 million domestic tomorrow; crossed $100 million internationally earlier this week
Lionsgate’s “The Housemaid,” the breakout hit of the holiday season, is conquering three box office milestones, surpassing $200 million worldwide by crossing the $100 million domestic box office threshold tomorrow and reaching $100 million internationally earlier this week.
After four weeks, “The Housemaid” continues to perform strongly in wide release domestically and continues to roll out internationally, playing in 66 territories. It was #1 at the UK box office last weekend, ahead of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Zootopia 2.” “The Housemaid” is Lionsgate’s second straight wide release to cross the $200 million worldwide box office threshold, with “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” reaching that milestone last month (currently $241 million worldwide).
The film, starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins, is directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine, based on the best-selling book by Freida McFadden, produced by Todd Lieberman, p.g.a., Laura Fischer, p.g.a. and Paul Feig, and executive produced by Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried and Freida McFadden.
Coming on the heels of “The Housemaid’s” breakout success, Lionsgate announced last week that it has been in development on “The Housemaid’s Secret,” which Sonnenshine is adapting from McFadden’s bestseller. The film will be produced by Lieberman, Feig, and Fischer and executive produced by Carly Elter and Alex Young alongside Sweeney and McFadden. “The Housemaid’s Secret” is being developed with an eye for director Paul Feig and stars Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone to return, with the studio planning a production start this year.
Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, “’The Housemaid’ demonstrates what can be accomplished when the right stars—Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins—are matched with brilliant filmmakers and captivating material, with it all coming together to create a truly compelling moviegoing experience and an undeniable appetite for more. Paul Feig surpassed expectations by delivering a thriller that’s everything audiences have been asking for. Early on, our team—particularly the women at Lionsgate—recognized Freida McFadden’s trilogy as exceptional cinematic material before it became a literary phenomenon. Congratulations to our outstanding cast and filmmakers and the entire Lionsgate team.”
“The Housemaid” plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.
