
The total revenue for April is £100,077,516. This is 65% higher than the £60.7m recorded in April 2024, which was led by “Kung Fu Panda 4” contributing £9.9m and “Back To Black” with £9.7m. A later Easter this year meant the holidays fell in April, boosting both family and adult audiences. Year to date we are now 13% ahead of 2024, a strong improvement from being on a par in March, and 9% ahead of 2023.
“A Minecraft Movie” secured the top position as the No.1 film of the month, grossing £52.0m. Jared Hess’ action-adventure has now surpassed “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” (£46.3m) to claim the title of the highest-grossing film of the year. Its debut of £14.9m marks the largest 3-day opening for a video game adaptation, surpassing “Sonic The Hedgehog’s” £11.7m debut (which included £7.7m from previews) and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s” opening of £15.6m (including £6.9m from previews). It is also on track to surpass “The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s” lifetime gross of £54.9m, seeking to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.
After two weeks on release, vampire drama-horror “Sinners” is No.2 for the month with £8.7m. Ryan Coogler’s latest collaboration with Michael B. Jordan has already surpassed the lifetime total of 2016’s “Creed” (£5.8m) and is only 28% behind the lifetime total of “Creed 2” (£10.0m). In our PostTrak exit poll, “Sinners” achieved a full 5-star rating and a 93% Total Positive score, with 73% of the audience saying they would Definitely Recommend the title.
Award-winning theatre musical “Six The Musical” is at No.3 for the month with £5.5m to date. It has now become the highest-grossing Event Cinema release of 2025 to date, surpassing “Macbeth: David Tennant And Cush Jumbo” (£2.3m), and ranks as the second-largest of all time (excluding “Secret Cinema”), behind only “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Concert) (£12.2m) and ahead of “Prima Facie – NT Live 2022” (£5.4m).
“The Amateur” is at No.4, grossing £4.0m for the month. Rami Malek’s thriller is his eight-biggest release to date, ahead of “Amsterdam” (£1.7m) and behind “Need For Speed” (£4.9m). This marks the second title directed by James Hawes; his prior release “One Life” grossed £10.0m in 2024.
The only March holdover completes the Top 5, with Disney’s “Snow White” adding a further £3.9m for the month. Marc Webb’s musical reimagining has a total to date of £11.2m and has surpassed the lifetime total of 2021’s “Cruella” (£9.5m), with the more recent “The Little Mermaid” (2023) currently ahead with £27.4m.
Disney’s third title in a row takes the No.6 spot, with the 20th anniversary re-release of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith” grossing £2.5m in the month. During its original debut the title achieved an opening of £14.2m and reached a total of £39.5m over its lifetime.
“The Penguin Lessons” ranks at No.7 for the month with £2.4m, surpassing Steve Coogan’s recent films including 2022’s “The Lost King” (£1.5m) and 2022’s “Greed” (£809k), currently trailing 2018’s “Holmes & Watson” (£2.7m) and 2019’s “Stan & Ollie” (£10.6m).
Placing at No.8, Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland’s war drama “Warfare” brings in £1.7m in April. This is the third-biggest picture to date from Garland, ahead of 2022’s “Men” (£1.0m) and behind 2015’s “Ex Machina” (£2.7m) and most recent leader 2024’s “Civil War” (£6.4m).
Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd’s horror-comedy “Death Of A Unicorn” sits at No.9 with £1.3m for the month.
Closing the chart at No.10 is last weekend’s opener, Ben Affleck’s action sequel “The Accountant 2,” with a total of £1.2m. Original instalment “The Accountant” debuted with £1.6m in 2016 and went on to a lifetime total of £5.2m.
May Preview
The month begins with the latest MCU picture “Thunderbolts*” (Disney) which opened yesterday (1st), followed by “Bluey At The Cinema: Let’s Play Chef Collection” (Vue Lumiere) opening today (2nd). Documentary “Ocean With David Attenborough” (Altitude) opens on Thursday 8th, followed by Nicolas Cage-led thriller “The Surfer” (Vertigo) opening on 9th. The following week brings horror sequel “Final Destination: Bloodlines” (Warner) opening on Wednesday 14th, joined by The Weeknd’s psychological thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow” (Lionsgate) opening on 16th. Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” (Paramount) and the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” (Disney) will both debut from Wednesday 21st, followed by Wes Anderson’s latest “The Phoenician Scheme” (Universal) opening on 23rd. The month wraps up with sixth installment “Karate Kid: Legends” (Sony), which starts previews on Wednesday 28th before its official release on Friday. Following that, we have “Peppa Meets The Baby Cinema Experience” (Trafalgar), Al Pacino horror film “The Ritual” (Altitude), and the British biographical drama “The Salt Path” (Black Bear), all set to open on 30th.
