
The total revenue for January reached £94,058,472, reflecting a 10% increase from the £85.2m reported in January 2024, and a 12% increase versus January 2023. Both previous years also saw significant contributions from December holdovers, with January 2024 benefiting from “Wonka” which added over £11m, while January 2023 was primarily driven by “Avatar: The Way of Water” which grossed £21.8m that month.
The top film this January is “Nosferatu” with £12.6m to date. Robert Eggers’ horror picture has achieved notable recognition within its genre, ranking as the sixth-highest horror release of all time. It has surpassed “A Quiet Place” which grossed £12.2m, and is slightly behind “The Final Destination” which stands at £12.8m.
Disney holds the next two positions. Having finished 2024 as top distributor, it maintained its leading position into 2025 with a significant market share of 30.8% in January.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” continued strongly from its December debut, and it sits at No.2 with £12.1m in January. Barry Jenkins’ prequel has achieved a total to date of £29.6m, surpassing the lifetime of Rob Marshall’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” (£27.4m).
At No.3 is “A Complete Unknown” grossing £9.1m in January. The Bob Dylan music biopic directed by James Mangold has become the sixth-highest grossing film of his career, surpassing “Le Mans ’66” (£6.2m) and currently behind “Knight & Day” (£9.7m).
“We Live In Time” ranks fourth for the month with £8.4m. John Crowley’s romantic drama is the director’s highest-grossing release, surpassing “Brooklyn” (£6.0m). This is the second-biggest romantic drama in the last five years, ahead of the likes of “Past Lives” (£3.0m), “Empire Of Light” (£3.8m), “After We Collided” (£4.0m) and behind only “It Ends With Us” (£21.9m).
“Sonic The Hedgehog 3” ranks fifth, contributing an additional £8.1m for the month. Jeff Fowler’s animated sequel has a total of £24.3m to date, surpassing the lifetime total of the original “Sonic The Hedgehog” which grossed £19.3m, and is currently tracking only 10% behind “Sonic The Hedgehog 2’s” £27.0m.
“Wicked” appears in the Top 10 chart for the third month in a row, bringing in an additional £4.9m in January. Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical has now crossed the £60m milestone and has overtaken “Inside Out 2” (£59.4m) to become the highest-grossing 2024 release with £60.7m. The title also ranks as the 27th biggest release of all time, surpassing “Oppenheimer” (£59.7m) and behind “Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King” (£61.0m) in the all-time chart.
“Moana 2” also remains in the chart, placing at No.7 with an additional £4.8m for January. Disney’s musical sequel has a total of £41.4m to date.
“Babygirl” ranks eighth for the month, bringing in a total of £4.1m. Halina Reijn’s 18-rated drama has outperformed most of last year’s 18-rated releases, surpassing “Terrifier 3” (£3.3m) and “The Substance” (£3.8m), behind only “Smile 2” (£6.5m) and “Poor Things” (£7.6m).
Robbie Williams’ biopic “Better Man” is at No.9 for the month grossing a further £3.8m and bringing its lifetime total to £6.7m.
Closing the chart this month is Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy-drama “A Real Pain” with £2.9m for the month.
February Preview
The month began with the debut of the music documentary “Becoming Led Zeppelin” (Sony), which launched IMAX-exclusive screenings on Wednesday and Thursday, leading up to its official release today (7th). Additionally, the historical drama “September 5” (Paramount) opened on Thursday 6th, followed by the release of DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” (Universal) and the action-comedy “Love Hurts” (Universal), both opening today. The highly anticipated fourth installment “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” (Universal) is set to open on Thursday 13th, alongside the 35th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney) and Valentine’s Day slasher “Heart Eyes” (Paramount), which will be released on 14th. Osgood Perkins’ latest horror film “The Monkey” (Black Bear) is scheduled to open on 21st. The final chapter of the anime series “Attack On Titan: The Last Attack” (Sony) will open on 26th, followed by Gia Coppola’s Pamela Anderson-starring drama “The Last Showgirl” (Picturehouse) which is set to open on 28th.
