Telecinco Cinema has been named as the 2017 recipient of the “Independent Producer of the Year Award” at CineEurope. The award will be presented as part of the CineEurope Awards Ceremony hosted by the Coca-Cola Company on Thursday, June 22, at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB) in Barcelona, Spain.
“For nearly two decades, Telecinco Cinema´s accomplishments have helped it grow into one of the major feature film studios not only in the Spanish market, but in Europe also,” stated Andrew Sunshine, Vice President of the Film Expo Group. “We are delighted to honor Telecinco Cinema for all of their international success.”
Under the stewardship of its two principals, Ghislain Barrois and Álvaro Augustin, respectively CEO and Managing Director, Telecinco Cinema has become the main catalyst of Spanish Cinema. It has produced nearly 80 films, which have grossed almost 400 million euros in Spain alone. Attracting substantial audiences, twelve of its titles have been ranked among the 20 largest domestic blockbusters, including The Spanish Affair, the most successful film in the history of Spanish cinema and “Tad, the Lost Explorer”, the largest-ever animated feature in Spain. No stranger to success, Telecinco Cinema has been awarded with 270 awards, including three Oscars, 73 Goyas and three BAFTAs.
A great contributor to the internationalization and world-wide recognition of Spanish Cinema, Telecinco Cinema has worked with such talent as Alejandro Amenábar, Guillermo del Toro or Steven Soderbergh, and has helped substantiate the careers of great directors such as J.A. Bayona, Daniel Monzón, Emilio Martínez-Lázaro, Álex de la Iglesia, Enrique Gato, Daniel Calparsoro, Paco León and Enrique Urbizu. Telecinco has also showcased renowned international actors that include, Sigourney Weaver, Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Rachel Weisz, Emma Watson, Ethan Hawke and Penelope Cruz.
Telecinco Cinema is currently showing the comedy “For Your Own Good” (Carlos Therón) and on August 25th will premiere the animated film “Tad Jones 2: The Secret of King Midas” (Enrique Gato and David Alonso), followed by “Perfect Strangers” (Álex de la Iglesia), and “Marrowbone” (Sergio G. Sánchez), with J.A. Bayona as executive producer.
