GDC Technology Limited (“GDC”), a leading global provider of digital cinema solutions, announced today that Schulman Theatres has installed North America’s first acoustically transparent cinema LED screen at Film Alley Bastrop in Texas. The ultra-fine-pitch P2.5 direct-view Tricorne Premium LED screen is installed in the theatre’s SPX Direct premium-format auditorium.
Film Alley Bastrop operates eight auditoriums with 584 seats. The 87-seat SPX Direct auditorium now features an acoustically transparent Tricorne Premium LED cinema screen with an ultra-fine 2.5 mm pixel pitch. Powered by GDC’s SR-5520 LED media server technology, the direct view display is certified under DCI CTP v1.5.0 to support DCI HDR, HFR and 3D presentations.
Unlike conventional cinema LED displays, which typically require screen-channel loudspeakers to be positioned above, below or around the display, the acoustically transparent Tricorne screen allows the loudspeakers to be positioned behind the LED screen. This preserves the traditional cinema speaker configuration and helps localize dialogue and sound effects to the corresponding action on screen.
Audiences can experience the image-quality advantages of direct-view LED—including high brightness, deep blacks, high contrast, rich color and consistent image quality—without changing the familiar behind-the-screen audio experience.
A Partnership Built on Technology and Trust
The project builds on a long-standing relationship between Schulman Theatres and GDC that began in 2010. GDC America worked closely with the Schulman technical team throughout the planning and installation of the Tricorne Premium LED system.
