CANAL+, the BLIC, the first signatories among the members of the BLOC (the SRF, the SPI, the UPC, the DIRE, the SDI and Animfrance), and the ARP have signed a new agreement, with an unprecedented duration of five years, intended to sustainably consolidate the place of cinema at the heart of the French cultural model.
The agreement, which applies to CANAL+ and CINÉ+ OCS, provides for a global commitment from CANAL+ of €980 million over five years in support of French and European cinema, starting in 2028.
In its scope, duration and the commitments it entails, this agreement between a broadcaster and the film industry is unprecedented.
Beyond its economic importance, it reaffirms a founding principle of French cultural exceptionalism: cinema constitutes a creative work that requires a specific mode of financing, support, and distribution. The signatories thus reaffirm their commitment to preserving a model that guarantees the diversity of works, the plurality of perspectives and aesthetics, the renewal of talent and writing styles, and the vitality of the entire film industry.
This agreement gives a central place to the cinematographic work, it takes into account its artistic and economic specificity and values the status of its author.
Beyond the financial commitment, the parties wished to include in this agreement structural guarantees designed to ensure a balanced development of film production.
Thus, CANAL+ is notably strengthening its support:
- to new authors and new writing styles;
- to first films and emerging talents;
- to films of diversity;
- to animated films;
- to the so-called “mid-budget” films, essential to the renewal of French cinema and its economic balance;
as well as the most ambitious works intended for a wide audience.
The agreement also includes several qualitative commitments aimed at strengthening the visibility of the works and supporting the diversity of cinematographies.
Cinema has been an essential element of CANAL+’s editorial identity since its inception. By renewing this commitment for the next five years, the signatories demonstrate their desire to continue and deepen this long-standing partnership, in a spirit of dialogue and shared ambition, in order to sustainably strengthen the conditions for the development and reach of French cinema, one of the most dynamic in the world. This agreement will allow CANAL+ to continue offering its subscribers the biggest French, European, and international films just six months after their theatrical release.
In the context of profound transformations for the distribution of works, this agreement offers authors, directors, producers, publishers-distributors, broadcasters a sustainable framework to keep cinema alive and allow it to meet the public.
The parties thus welcome the spirit of responsibility and dialogue that guided the negotiations and are delighted to open a new cycle of cooperation in service of filmmaking. They call for the continuation of the work undertaken with all stakeholders in order to preserve an ambitious media chronology, essential for financing film production and ensuring the sustainability of France’s cultural exception.
Maxime Saada, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CANAL+:
“I am delighted with this new agreement, which illustrates the strength of the bond between CANAL+ and cinema. By investing a historic level of nearly €1 billion, for an unprecedented period of 5 years, we are very proud to reaffirm our support for the art of film, its power, its creativity, and its diversity. The best of cinema is on CANAL+ as soon as 6 months after its theatrical release and will remain there for many years to come.”
