Angel, the film & TV platform curated by over one million members of the Angel Guild, announces the upcoming release of the festival-favorite “The Strangers’ Case.” Written and directed by Brandt Andersen, this gripping tale of interconnected refugee stories will see a limited theatrical release in December 2025, followed by a wide release in January 2026, exclusively in theaters.

Inspired by Andersen’s Oscar-shortlisted short film “Refugee” (2020), “The Strangers’ Case” unfolds through a Shakespearean lens, drawing its title from a poignant speech in Sir Thomas More defending displaced peoples. Set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War, the film follows a pediatric surgeon, Amira (Yasmine Al Massri), and her daughter, whose lives intertwine with five families across four continents in a chain reaction of tragedy, resilience, and hope. The ensemble cast includes Omar Sy, Yahya Mahayni, Ziad Bakri, Constantine Markoulakis, and Jason Beghe, delivering performances lauded as “extraordinary” and “mythology-making” by festival juries.

Premiering at the 2024 Berlinale, where it won the Amnesty International Film Award, “The Strangers’ Case” has been celebrated for its authenticity and suspense, with Euronews calling it a rare blend of “striking authenticity with pulse-racing thrills.” Andersen, a seasoned producer (“Everest,” “Lone Survivor”) and activist who has worked extensively with refugees in Syria, Jordan, and beyond, infuses the film with real-world gravitas, incorporating Syrian extras who have faced the Aegean crossing depicted in the story. To date, the film has received over 50 Festival awards.
