“In December 1977, the original Star Wars opened at the Village 4 in glorious Dolby Stereo,” says John Smith, Senior Film Programmer for Alamo Drafthouse. “Forty-seven years later, we’re finishing the story and sharing the complete saga with Austin audiences.”
Alamo Drafthouse Village’s Star Wars event is one of many special events marking the fiftieth anniversary of Alamo Drafthouse Village. Opened in 1974 by long-defunct Presidio Theatres, the “Village 4” is Austin’s oldest continually operating first-run cinema. Operated by Alamo Drafthouse since 2001, the Village is in the final weeks of a remodel that includes new seats and a brand new lobby design anchored by Video Vortex, a free rental video store powered by the legendary Vulcan Video collection.
