The Gothic fairytale is critically acclaimed filmmaker’s first film to premiere in Cannes

NEW YORK, NEW YORK ( June 4, 2025 ) -

1-2 Special announced today that it acquired all US rights for Christian Petzold’s “Miroirs No. 3.” The film premiered in Directors’ Fortnight at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and marked the filmmaker’s first showing in Cannes. 1-2 Special will release the film in theaters.

“Miroirs No. 3” reunites Petzold with star Paula Beer, with whom he has previously collaborated on a string of critically acclaimed films including “Transit,” “Undine,” and “Afire” (winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival and Best Film at the San Sebastian Film Festival). Petzold’s previous films include the highly acclaimed “Barbara” (winner of the Best Director award at the Berlin Film Festival) and box office breakout “Phoenix,” along with earlier thrillers such as “Yella” and “Jerichow.”

Beer plays Laura, an aspiring pianist, whose life is upended after miraculously surviving a car crash. Physically unhurt but deeply shaken, she is taken in by a local woman who witnessed the accident and begins to care for Laura with motherly devotion. When the woman’s husband and adult son also give up their initial resistance to Laura’s presence, the four of them slowly build up some family-like routine. Soon they can no longer ignore the ghosts of the past, and Laura is forced to come to terms with her own life.

“Miroirs No. 3” co-stars Barbara Auer (“Transit”), Matthias Brandt (“Afire”), and Enno Trebs (“Afire”) and was produced by Schramm Film Koerner Weber Kaiser, marking the company’s long time collaboration with the director, and in co-production with ZDF and ARTE. The film is funded by Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM), Deutscher Filmförderfonds (DFFF), and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB).

The Match Factory represents the director’s library, which includes critically acclaimed “Afire” (2023), “Undine” (2020), “Transit” (2018), “Phoenix” (2014), and “Barbara” (2012), as well as early works such as “The State I Am In” (2000).

The deal was negotiated by The Match Factory on behalf of the filmmakers with 1-2 Special.
