Plans have now been submitted to Tower Hamlets Council for the redevelopment of the much-loved Genesis Cinema, ensuring its long-term future as a cultural landmark in East London. This follows a comprehensive consultation process which included immediate neighbours and the wider local community.
This milestone represents a crucial step in safeguarding the cinema, which has been a cornerstone of the local community for generations. Tyrone Walker-Hebborn, who has run Genesis Cinema for the past 25 years, remains at the heart of this project, reaffirming his commitment to the venue he brought back to life in 1999 after years of abandonment. Under his leadership, Genesis Cinema has become one of London’s most cherished independent cinemas, known for its commitment to affordable cinema, independent films, and community engagement.
“This project is about securing the next chapter for Genesis Cinema,” said Tyrone. “We’ve worked tirelessly to make this cinema a cultural hub, and now we have the opportunity to ensure it thrives for generations to come. This is about protecting what makes Genesis Cinema special and making sure it remains a key part of East London’s creative landscape.”
The cinema element of the redevelopment, designed by NBDA – specialists in cinema projects – will deliver a state-of-the-art four screen cinema, concessions area and bar/events space on the lower floors, enhancing the venue’s facilities while preserving its unique character. Maintaining a prominent ground-floor entrance and café-bar will ensure the cinema’s continued presence as a focal point for the community and the new lifts will enhance accessibility.
The submission comes at a time of unprecedented financial difficulty for cinemas across the country. Rising costs, changes in audience habits, the aftermath of the COVID pandemic and the impact of recent writers and actors’ strikes have put many much-loved cinemas at risk. This project ensures that Genesis Cinema will not only survive but continue to thrive in the years ahead.
As part of the wider plans, high quality student accommodation with associated amenity space will be provided on the upper floors. The development also vitally secures the future of the cinema, ensuring it remains financially viable for the long term. This approach allows Genesis to continue offering high-quality programming and affordable ticket prices while adapting to the evolving needs of the area.
With the application now submitted, supporters of Genesis Cinema are encouraged to share their views with Tower Hamlets Council and help secure the future of this iconic venue.
