The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today that “Frankenstein,” written and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, along with stars Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, will receive The Gotham Vanguard Tribute at the 35th Annual Gotham Film Awards Ceremony, taking place on Monday, December 1, 2025 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. With this tribute, The Gotham will honor the enduring impact of Mary Shelley’s story and celebrate Guillermo del Toro, Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi for their bold reimagining of this timeless tale.

“Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ has captivated audiences for more than 200 years, and Guillermo del Toro’s epic adaptation reminds us why this story continues to endure,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. “Guillermo, Oscar, and Jacob have created something truly breathtaking — a film that honors the literary legacy while boldly exploring profound questions about what it means to be human. Their collaboration embodies the melding of creativity, talent, and vision that The Gotham aspires to celebrate.”

The Vanguard Tribute was established to recognize pioneering films that push the boundaries of cinema through fearless artistic choices. From Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes the definitive retelling of Mary Shelley’s genre-defining novel of life and death – an epic drama about what it means to be human, to crave love, and seek understanding. Golden Globe-winner Oscar Isaac plays the brilliant but tortured scientist Victor Frankenstein, who embarks on an ego-driven quest to bring new life into this world, resulting in the Creature, played by BAFTA-nominee Jacob Elordi, whose very existence provokes questions about what it really means to be a monster.

The sprawling epic takes viewers from the remote reaches of the Arctic to the bloody battlefields of 19th-century Europe, as Frankenstein and his Creature go on their own search for meaning in a world that can seem quite mad. Also starring Mia Goth as the luminous Elizabeth and two-time Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz, Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” is a reminder of how, at heart, we are all creatures, lost and found.

Guillermo del Toro has a long history with The Gotham, having been honored in 2006 with the Director Tribute alongside Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu. Oscar Isaac is a three-time Gotham nominee for Outstanding Performance, and Jacob Elordi is being recognized by The Gotham for the first time.

“Frankenstein,” which had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, will be in select theaters October 17 and globally on Netflix November 7.

Winners of the 35th Annual Gotham Film Awards will be honored at the awards ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street on Monday, December 1, 2025. Nominees will be announced on October 28th, 2025.
