More Than 7.8 Million Moviegoers in the U.S. and Internationally Saw a Movie at AMC Thursday-Sunday, as AMC Theatres Records Its Biggest and Busiest Weekend Since 2019 Based on Global Attendance and Global Admissions Revenue

The opening weekend of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" were the primary drivers of AMC’s success this weekend, along with the strong holdover performances of "Sound of Freedom" and "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One"

Leawood, Kansas ( July 24, 2023 ) -

AMC Theatres® (NYSE:AMC & APE), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced it set multiple post-reopening records, as the company recorded more than 7.8 million moviegoers at an AMC in the U.S. or ODEON Cinemas location internationally from Thursday to Sunday. This marks the most attendance and admissions revenue in a single weekend since 2019, which by definition means the most since theatres reopened in 2020.

Theatres were packed all weekend long, as AMC set post-reopening single-day attendance records on each of Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the United States. Saturday also marked AMC’s realizing its fifth highest single-day admissions ticket revenues recorded in the U.S. in AMC’s 103-year history.

In addition to high ticket revenues, Saturday saw AMC enjoying its second-highest ever food and beverage revenue day of all time, coming in behind the opening-weekend Saturday of “Avengers: Endgame” in May of 2019.

Of note, AMC’s Barbie Corvette collectable concession vessel was of particular interest to guests, as that item essentially sold out over the weekend.

The attendance was driven primarily by the opening weekend success of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” both of which significantly exceeded industry box office expectations. In the weeks leading up to the opening, guests were highly engaged online about a “Barbie”-“Oppenheimer” double feature, which materialized in more than 87,000 AMC Stubs members booking tickets to see both movies on the same day.

And while it was the top two films of the weekend that led the charge at the box office, AMC’s attendance record was the result of a much deeper box office, supported by the performance of titles like “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Sound of Freedom,” among others.

AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron commented:

“What a fabulous weekend for moviegoers at AMC’s movie theatres in the U.S. and abroad. AMC sends an enormous thank you and congratulations to Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the entire team at Warner Bros., and to Christopher Nolan and the team at Universal Pictures. They’ve demonstrated that well-made, well-marketed films that captivate audiences can open on the same weekend and both enjoy great success. That success extends beyond just those two films. AMC would not have set its post-reopening attendance record without the on-going solid performances of ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ and ‘Sound of Freedom.’”
