Hungary’s First Samsung Onyx LED Cinema Opens at Lurdy Cinema

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced a new 14-meter (46 feet) standard size for its Onyx cinema LED lineup at CinemaCon 2026
Budapest, Hungary ( June 24, 2026 ) -

Pannonia Movie Kft., in cooperation with Samsung and the Lurdy Ház Shopping Center, announced at the CineEurope trade fair that it will be the first in Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe to install a new-generation Samsung Onyx LED display in the Lurdy Cinema, which represents a significant technological leap compared to traditional projector technology. The cinema chain will welcome domestic viewers with breathtaking 4K quality, exclusive comfort, and a unique sound system from September.

A new era of cinema can begin at Lurdy Cinema, where a hall called Samsung Onyx, capable of accommodating more than 250 people, will open in September. The cinema will be able to offer a state-of-the-art visual experience with the help of the 11.5-meter diameter, Scope aspect ratio Samsung Onyx 4K resolution LED display. This innovation marks the launch of a unique technology in Hungary.

Unparalleled Visuals and True Black
Unlike traditional screen and projector-based systems, the Samsung Onyx LED screen emits its own light, ensuring perfectly defined dark and light tones and true blacks without light leakage. The 4K resolution panel with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage delivers an exceptionally rich color palette, while a refresh rate of up to 120Hz enables ultra-smooth, continuous motion.

One of the biggest innovations in the technology is brilliant HDR (High Dynamic Range) picture quality, which enables the display to reach 300 nits of brightness – more than six times the 48 nits of conventional projectors. Thanks to this exceptional contrast ratio, even the darkest scenes retain their detail, texture and depth, with fine details clearly visible, while text remains crystal clear.

Because the display provides uniform brightness, the image is not distorted at the edges, so from any point in the room – even from the furthest seats – the audience can enjoy exactly the sharp, uncompromising view that filmmakers and directors dreamed of. The technology also supports 3D projections, so in the future, 3D works will be enjoyed in an even more impressive form.

Complete Renovation for Maximum Comfort
In order to enhance the experience, during the works taking place in August, hall 10 of Lurdy Cinema will also be completely structurally transformed. In addition to the construction of a special support structure for the LED wall, the audience will be provided with new, VIP-category armchairs with motorized reclining backrests and footrests. Since premium sound is essential for perfect image quality, the cinema chain will also install a Dolby 7.1 sound system in the hall.

We are extremely proud to be the first to bring this cutting-edge technology to Hungarian cinema fans ,” said Attila Farkas, CEO of Pannonia Movie Kft. ” The use of cutting-edge technological developments has always played a prominent role in the history of our company. Our partnership with Samsung is a huge step forward, allowing us to offer our viewers an exclusive and groundbreaking experience. We are confident in the success of the project, and we plan to implement similar developments in other cinemas in the network in the future.”

“Europe is a key market for film innovation, and the launch of Onyx marks a new chapter in our commitment to delivering high-quality film experiences,” said Alain Chamaillard, European Director of Cinema Business at Samsung Electronics.

Lurdy Cinema’s groundbreaking Samsung Onyx theater is expected to open its doors to the public in early September. The cinema chain plans to inaugurate the latest pride of the domestic cinema market with a 3D film optimized for the special capabilities of the Onyx LED display.
