Select 2027 festival titles to receive theatrical distribution across major U.S. markets as Harlem Film House expands its “Checks Not Trophies” revenue-sharing model.

New York ( September 22, 2026 ) -

Harlem Film House has expanded its partnership with LOOK Cinemas to provide theatrical distribution for select independent films emerging from the 2027 Hip Hop Film Festival, establishing a direct pathway from festival exhibition to commercial theatrical release in major U.S. markets.

The agreement gives selected filmmakers access to Look Cinemas’ national exhibition network, with opportunities in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and Texas.

The initiative advances the festival’s “Checks Not Trophies” model, which prioritizes filmmaker compensation and commercial opportunities over traditional festival accolades. Participating filmmakers already receive a share of eligible festival-generated revenue. The expanded LOOK partnership adds theatrical distribution to the festival’s existing revenue-sharing and industry development programs.

“The festival should not be the end of a film’s journey,” said CR Capers, Founder and CEO of Harlem Film House. “Our goal is to create a pipeline where independent filmmakers can generate revenue, reach audiences and move into meaningful theatrical opportunities.”

Shelby Schultz, Director of Programming at Look Cinemas, emphasized the company’s commitment to independent film and its role in bringing new voices to theatrical audiences.

“Supporting filmmakers is in LOOK Cinemas’ DNA,” said Schultz. “From our first day operating, LOOK has worked directly with filmmakers to promote and premiere their films theatrically. With this partnership, we look forward to creating a clear pathway for films to be seen on the big screen.”

The agreement builds on the organizations’ existing relationship, which included hosting the 2026 Hip Hop Film Festival at Look Cinemas in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Beyond the annual festival, the partners are exploring year-round programming, satellite screenings and coordinated marketing to support selected titles across LOOK’s theatrical network.

The new distribution pathway complements Harlem Film House’s existing filmmaker initiatives, including The Boss Pitch, which connects independent filmmakers directly with executives in financing, representation, production and distribution, and myFRESHtv, its streaming platform.

The 2027 Hip Hop Film Festival will take place August 25–29, 2027, in New York City. Submissions are currently open through FilmFreeway.
