Celluloid Junkie’s 2025 Top Women in Global Cinema is proudly sponsored by Barco and Vue Lumière.
Barco continues to elevate the global entertainment experience with cutting-edge cinema technologies, including laser projection and HDR. Vue Lumière is the dynamic film distribution arm of Vue, one of the world’s leading international cinema operators.
We’re incredibly grateful to both Barco and Vue Lumière for supporting our editorial mission to spotlight some of the cinema industry’s brightest and most inspiring talents from the past year. We couldn’t do it without them. Be sure to visit their websites to learn more.
The ninth edition of Celluloid Junkie’s Top Women in Global Cinema drew more than four times the number of nominations needed to complete our list of 50 — a testament to the growing visibility and impact of women across the industry. The abundance of extraordinary candidates made this year’s selection process the most challenging yet (yes, we say that every year, but this time we really mean it). Thanks to our dedicated selection committee — Mariam el Bacha, Laure Galtier (UNIC), Branden Miller (Amazon MGM Studios), and Michelle Villegas (The Boxoffice Company) — we emerged with our sanity (sort of) intact and are proud to present the 2025 cohort.
In an effort to streamline the process and bring greater clarity for nominators and nominees alike, we introduced formal selection criteria for the first time this year. These guidelines, which will continue to evolve, help distill what the panel is looking for as the list gains broader recognition. For those already thinking ahead to 2026, the most helpful submission includes an updated bio or summary of the nominee’s recent achievements, initiatives, or standout contributions from the past 12–18 months. While excellence in one’s role is expected, we rely on this additional context to help us answer the key question we return to again and again: Why should this person be on the list this year?
If you’re scanning the list and wondering why someone isn’t on it — don’t worry. They may appear on our Top Women in Global Distribution list, publishing this November, or they might be new to the exhibition space and on track for a future nomination. A few previous honorees also asked not to be considered this year, instead encouraging us to spotlight colleagues and emerging voices in the field.
Finally, we want to acknowledge some feedback we received during this year’s process. A couple of individuals and companies suggested that gender-specific recognition lists are no longer relevant — maybe even a little “out of fashion.” While we respect differing perspectives, and have ourselves reflected on the continued need for this initiative, the list was created with a clear purpose: to celebrate the exceptional contributions of women in a historically male-dominated industry. Though progress is being made, the volume and quality of this year’s nominations — and the enthusiasm the list continues to generate — make it clear that this recognition still matters. As long as that remains true, we’ll continue to spotlight the top women in global cinema with pride.
