Rats, I was hoping this would lead to a touring festival -- a barge sailing the world with Christina Lindberg and ten tons of old Swedish movies.

Has anybody ever written a good English-language guide to Swedish sensational cinema?

Clearly a case for the magic of Alternative Content. A good package of affordable non-DCI equipment, a deal to get concerts and other entertainment (or even non-entertainment)...I venture to say that an Art House or out of the way venue could actually do better, not stuck to the "same ol' thing."

Here at 3ality Digital, we're delighted about this agreement, because it will dramatically expand the universe of 3D-enabled theaters over the next few years. And that means more audiences for films made with our groundbreaking technology. Our first film, "U2 3D," shot on the band's Vertigo tour and released last February, was lauded as "a technical achievement" and "a work of art" by the New York Times, and pronounced "even better than the real thing" by USA Today. We look forward to being able to bring these kinds of films to a dramatically wider audience: they deserve it!

James, thanks for your informative updates. Should have remembered that Gulf + Western owned Paramount until 1970's and 1980's.

I appreciate your filling in some of the details in this post. We could only go off of what we found online which obviously, as in the case of "Love Story" wasn't accurate. I've made some changes to the post based on your input.

Most importantly, thank you so much for posting a comment. Your first hand account of working at the Circle is priceless and truly adds to the post. It's a shame the theatre was destroyed through multiplexing. It wasn't the first theatre to have this happen and more than likely won't be the last.

Redstone didn't "own" Paramount Pictures till the 1980s. During the Circle Cinemas "glory decade",from 1965-76, Redstone had enormous influence due to the large number of theatres he operated and booked. The Circle also played a lot of films from Fox and Columbia.

LOVE STORY played six months; not a year; from Christmas, 1970 to June,1971. I was Assistant Manager at the time. Later I was the manager. Other films played similar long runs during that period, such as CATCH-22, PATTON, THE WAY WE WERE, THE GREAT GATSBY, CHINATOWN.

The renovation into a twin cinema, later a triple and finally 7 screens destroyed the Circle as a classy place to see a movie. The auditoriums were small, the screens tiny, and the whole feeling become one of cramming too much into too small a space. I was glad to have moved on before it happened.
